On 15 and 16 September, Martin Roger, Undersecretary for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made a visit to Kazakhstan, where he met with Deputy Foreign Minister Arman Issetov, the President’s Foreign Policy Adviser Erzhan Kazykhan, Minister of Science and Higher Education Nurbek Sayasat, Minister of Transport Nurlan Sauranbayev, Deputy Minister of Justice Daniel Vaissov, and Deputy Minister of Digital Development Kanysh Tuleushin.
“Estonia and Kazakhstan share a mutual interest in developing bilateral relations, maintaining political dialogue, and identifying additional opportunities for cooperation in the fields of transport, education and digital development,” Undersecretary Roger said. “We value Kazakhstan’s openness and wish to strengthen ties that support both bilateral relations and regional stability,” he added. The visit also included discussions on enhancing customs cooperation between the two countries to promote legitimate trade.
Roger also held talks with his Kazakh counterparts on relations between the European Union and Kazakhstan, the importance of EU sanctions in countering Russia’s war of aggression, as well as cooperation between Estonia and Kazakhstan in multilateral organisations such as the United Nations and the OSCE. “The meetings reaffirmed the shared commitment of Estonia and Kazakhstan to upholding the UN Charter and the fundamental principles of international law, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders. It is important to continue this dialogue, even if our views or approaches differ on certain issues.”
