Diplomatic relations between Estonia and Kyrgyzstan were established on April 12, 1996.
Currently, Kyrgyzstan does not have an accredited ambassador to Estonia.

Bilateral Relations

Key Visits

The only high-level visit was the official visit of Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip to Kyrgyzstan on December 12–13, 2013. Meetings were held with Kyrgyz Prime Minister Zhantoro Satybaldiev, President Almazbek Atambayev, and Parliament Chairman Asylbek Jeenbekov. The Prime Minister opened an economic round table attended by the Estonian business delegation and also inaugurated the Estonian Honorary Consulate.

In October 2018, Kyrgyzstan’s parliamentary speaker Dastanbek Dzhumabekov visited Estonia, meeting with Riigikogu Speaker Eiki Nestor and Prime Minister Jüri Ratas.

Political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Estonia and Kyrgyzstan took place in November 2018.

Cultural Cooperation

On the initiative of Estonia’s embassy, the transmission of Estonian culture to Kyrgyzstan has been organized. Estonian films are shown at international film festivals in Kyrgyzstan. In 2012, an Estonian retelling of the Kyrgyz epic “Manas” was published, featuring many illustrations and runic verses (compiled by Peeter Ilus, published by Penikoorem).

Development Cooperation

Estonia has supported a number of development projects in Kyrgyzstan, the largest of which is the Kyrgyz version of Estonia’s X-Road, called Tunduk, created in cooperation with the Estonian e-Governance Academy (eGA) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
