Joint Statement for the anniversary of the January events in Kazakhstan

We wish the people of Kazakhstan peace and prosperity in the New Year and stand in solidarity with all those affected by the tragic events of January 2022.

During this period of reflection, we welcome President Tokayev’s continued efforts to advance political pluralism and enhance human rights protections in Kazakhstan.

In this regard, we recommend the completion of a full and transparent investigation into the violence that cost at least 238 people their lives. We also call for accountability for all ill-treatment of those detained, for the sake of those affected and of future generations in Kazakhstan.

We remain committed to work together in partnership with Kazakhstan to tackle the challenges facing our countries, and to build a more stable and prosperous world.
